Lombok is an island in the Lesser Sunda Islands or Nusa Tenggara are separated by the Lombok Strait of Bali in Sebelat west and the Alas Strait in east of Sumbawa. The island is approximately spherical with a sort of "tail" on the southwest length of approximately 70 km. This island area reaching 5,435 km2, placing its ranks 108 out of the list of islands is based on the extent of the world. The main town on the island is the city of Mataram.

Lombok including the provinces of West Nusa Tenggara and the island itself is divided into four District and one City: Mataram City, Regency West Lombok, Regency Central Lombok, Regency of East Lombok, and Regency of North Lombok.

Lombok Strait marks the limit of the flora and fauna of Asia. Starting from the island of Lombok to the east, flora and fauna more showed similarities with the flora and fauna found in Australia than Asia. About 80% of the population of the the island is Sasak tribe, an ethnic group that is still close to the tribal peoples of Bali, but must converted  to Islam. The rest of the population are Balinese, Javanese, Chinese, and Arabic.

Besides Indonesian as the national language, the population of the island of Lombok (especially Sasak), using the Sasak language as the main language in everyday conversation. Lombok itself throughout the Sasak language can be found in four different dialect Lombok namely northern, central, northeast and southeast. In addition to the many tribal people of Bali who live in Lombok (mostly from the former kingdom of Karangasem), in some places, particularly in the West Lombok and the Municipality of Mataram can be found settlements that use Balinese language  as the language of daily conversation.

Most of the inhabitants of the island of Lombok especially Sasak tribe adheres to the religion of Islam. The second largest religion practiced on the island is the religion of Hinduism, which is embraced by the residents of the descendants of Bali which amounted to about 15% of the entire population. Adherents of Christian, Buddhist and other religions can also be found, and especially embraced by migrants from different tribes and ethnic groups who live on this island. The largest religious organisation in Lombok is Nahdlatul Wathan (NW), the organisation also established many Islamic educational institutions in various levels from the lowest level up to college.

In North Lombok, precisely in the area of Bayan, especially among the elderly, can be found the adherents of Islam Wetu Telu (three). Unlike most adherents of Islam who perform prayers five times a day, the followers of this doctrine practice the prayers obligatory only at three time.
